The Workshop

Short notes from the building. The choices, the mistakes, and what got thrown away along the way.

Tenkt

The puzzles that get thrown away

Every puzzle in Tenkt is generated locally on your phone, from the current date. The requirement is that a board must have exactly one solution, and that it can be found with logic alone, no guessing.

So the generator makes more boards than it publishes. A solver checks each one: if it has two solutions, it is discarded. If it requires guessing, it is discarded. The generator tries again until the board passes.

If you still find a board that makes you guess, that is a bug. Send me the date and the puzzle type and I will fix it.

Lun

Why Lun has no streaks

Tenkt counts days in a row. It makes sense there: a morning puzzle is something you choose. Lun had streaks in the early sketches too, but they were removed.

A migraine diary is used on bad days. A counter that resets because you had a good week without opening the app punishes you for feeling well.

So Lun counts nothing you can lose. No streaks, no badges, no red dots. The app is the same no matter how long it has been.

Bumle Bjørn

Testing Bumle Bjørn

Bumle Bjørn is tested by my daughter before every update. The feedback is easy to read: if something is boring, she puts the phone down. If something is good, she wants to play it again.

That is more precise than it sounds. Adult testers are polite and call things interesting. Kids are honest.

What survives here ships to other kids.
